Violence Against Women : What Everyone Needs to Know®

True (Monash Univ., Australia) begins this book by establishing VAWG as the acronym for "violence against women and girls" and then defining it by widespread forms of violence in Western societies. Following that are historical accounts of such violence and the women's movements in the US and other countries. This book offers a condensed review of violence against women, covering a wide range of subjects, such as possible economic impact, policies and rights affecting women, and many other viewpoints not necessarily considered when dealing with this topic. For example, chapter 8 ("VAWG and the Media") deals with how various national and international media represent women who are victims of violence. The author maintains that the general objectification of women reduces them to either victims or whores. Following this, she examines media portrayals of women, including how they should and do act. The author also discusses #MeToo and similar movements, considering how they may exacerbate violence against women and girls. Because it tries to address so many topics, this book may have worked better as two or more volumes. Summing Up: Recommended. With reservations. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. --Susan J Zuber-Chall, Emporia State University
