Emerging Infectious Diseases Sourcebook

CHOICE

This first edition ready reference compilation on a topic of considerable public interest represents a new addition to the multifarious "Health Reference Series" collection from Omnigraphics, perhaps inviting comparison and some overlaps with Contagious Diseases Sourcebook (3rd ed., CH, May'17, 54-4063) offered in the same series, itself recently updated and also edited by Williams. That being said, a lot of information is packed into this book! It presents many new or reemerging infectious diseases occurring around the world, while also covering the basics of the immune system, different types of emerging infections, contributions of climate change, effects on international travel and public health, diagnosis/treatment options, and prevention. Williams, as author/editor, contributes an introductory overview of potential disease agents and highlights those of special interest in each microorganism category. Although publication of this volume occurred before the current COVID-19 pandemic burst on the scene, a section on coronaviruses is included, clearly intended for the general reader as a quick, basic resource rather than for a scientific audience. This volume could make an excellent acquisition for a public health library or for individual readers who need or wish to travel often. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers. --Maura Collins Pavao, Worcester State University
