From scripted shows like Orange Is the New Black to documentaries such as Lock Up, the concept of prisons is firmly ingrained in the American psyche. This volume provides a solid overview of the history and background of US prisons. Authored by Banks (Capilano Univ., Canada), a historical overview from Colonial times to the present forms the first 50 pages of the book. Following that, more attention is devoted to popular prison-related issues such as recidivism, gangs, and solitary confinement. A section on "perspectives" explores diverse topics such as supermax prisons, female corrections officers, and the war on drugs, authored by criminal justice professors and corrections professionals. Next are profiles of over 20 advocacy groups, government agencies, and professional organizations, followed by a section on data and documents on prison demographics, offenses, and incarceration rates from sources such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics (CH, Sep'13, 51-0532). The book rounds out with a bibliography of nearly 200 sources and a small glossary of key terms. Although intended as a reference source, this volume is a good introduction for undergraduates and could just as easily belong in a circulating collection. Summing Up: Highly recommended. High school through undergraduate students; professionals/practitioners; general readers. --Joe A. Hardenbrook, Carroll University
