Concise History of Western Music
CHOICE
Copyright American Library Association, used with permission.
A History of Western Music has remained the most generally admired text for college music-history courses during the past 40 years, despite increasing competition from histories that also include world and popular music. This concise version reduces the 5th edition (1996) by approximately one third. The number of chapters (22) remains the same, as do most of the chapter headings. Hanning makes large cuts in the pre-18th-century sections dealing with theory, notation, and music peripheral to the Western tradition. She has reduced content within chapter sections by eliminating or drastically reducing information on minor composers, compositions, and genres. For example, in treating 19th-century French grand opera, one finds the original text on Meyerbeer, a description of a scene from Les Huguenots, and mention of Auber, Rossini, and Halevy. Hanning omits Spontini, Cherubini, and Mehul. For opera comique, she retains the general description and mention of Auber's Fra Diavolo, dropping references to works by Boieldieu and Herold. Hanning has made material more accessible by providing a "prelude" and "postlude" for each chapter and boxes on special topics. Students using this book will read much of what Grout and Palisca said, along with some coaching by Hanning. Unfortunately, Hanning dropped the bibliographies. Recommended primarily for libraries that do not have Grout-Palisca. W. K. Kearns; University of Colorado at Boulder
