This edited reprint of an 1895 text offers 98 U.S. Army female nurses' reflections, remembrances, and reminiscences of their service in the Civil War. Ranging from one or two paragraphs to an 11-page essay, the pieces, originally collected by Holland, are mostly first-person accounts. They treat recruitment, motivation, family background, the circumstances and conditions of service, near-escapes from marauding rebels, and popular sentiment. Poignant pictures of war's hardships and horrors fill the pages and personalize the Civil War from the perspective of women veterans. That this collection stands virtually alone exposes the dearth of scholarly attention on the Union nurses, despite the fact that 5000 women served. Recommended for collections on the Civil War, women, and nursing.‘Thomas Davis, Arizona State Univ., Tempe (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
