Lyme disease : why it's spreading, how it makes you sick, and what to do about it

Summary: An expert on tick-borne diseases, Alan G. Whether they contracted it recently or are managing the aftereffects decades later, Lyme disease sufferers may have relied on the Internet for information about the disease. Offering an alternative, -Barbour (medicine & microbiology, Univ. of California, Irvine, Sch. of Medicine) collects his years of research as codiscoverer of the cause of the disease into one text, eliminating the need for multiple sources; any other resource interested parties may look for is probably based on his original works anyway. Although this is a book for the lay reader, it is by no means an "easy read." A basic understanding of how the body reacts to disease would be helpful. However, to assist his audience, the author includes an extensive glossary as well as listing of "trusted" websites that he has vetted for accuracy. -VERDICT Recommended for a general audience interested in Lyme disease and somewhat familiar with the foundational underlying science of its life cycle. Proving that "consumer health" doesn't have to mean dumbing down research, Barbour has written a truly intriguing and accurate study.--Rachel M. Minkin, Michigan State Univ.
