Coffins of the Brave : Lake Shipwrecks of the War Of 1812

The War of 1812 quickly devolved into a struggle to gain control over the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain; these waterways provided the transportation and communication avenues into the interior of the continent, and whoever controlled them had a decided strategic advantage. In this heavily illustrated volume, Crisman and his contributors provide a documentary and archaeological account of 16 different examples of 1812-era naval and commercial vessels. The craft range from small prewar boats to gun-brigs, warships, a steamboat hull converted to an armed schooner, two gunboats, and two postwar schooners. While only two decisive battles occurred on these waters (on Lakes Erie and Champlain), during the era of peace that followed, the ships were decommissioned and over time they deteriorated, often sinking in the harbor. This volume reveals how the shipbuilders balanced construction techniques--providing strength, durability, stability, capability, and seaworthiness--with creating armed weapons for the naval struggle on the lakes along the US-Canadian border. Ultimately, the book's balanced documentary scholarship and archaeological research creates a very important account of the War of 1812 on the lakes. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
