Botched honorifics are the stuff of diplomatic nightmares. In this second, expanded edition of a work first published in 2008, Hickey, deputy director of the Protocol School of Washington, sets forth clear guidelines on the best forms of addressing and introducing government officials from around the world, members of the armed services, and more. New niceties included in this edition are illustrations on the proper positioning of name-place cards and badges. The bibliography offers avenues for more etiquette edification. VERDICT A comprehensive ready reference covering the proper protocols on forms of address. (c) Copyright 2014. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This revised work informs the user about the correct form of address in both conversation and written communication. The volume is usefully arranged in three sections: Terms, Style & Usage, Forms of Address, and Country Names & Officials. It is a delightful work to browse, as users will come across these nuggets: how to address a Zoroastrian without a doctorate or how to address the wife of a son of a baron; there is also a list of U.S. diplomats not addressed as The Honorable (minister-counselor, attache, first secretary, counselor). And the Conversation Tips section doesn't overestimate the diplomatic skill of some readers, warning them not to say, Your name sounds so foreign. Where are you from? An authoritative work for larger public and academic libraries.--Altschiller, Donald Copyright 2014 Booklist
