The Three Stooges FAQ : Everything Left to Know about the Eye-Poking, Face-Slapping, Head-Thumping Geniuses

The resurgence of interest in the Three Stooges (e.g., Stoogeology: Essays on the Three Stooges, ed. by Peter Seely and Gail Pieper, CH, Dec'07, 45-1937) inevitably invites an encyclopedia of trivia on this most inane trinity of film comedy. This is that book, and it is a cornucopia of details and insights. Covering the two-reel shorts of vaudeville veterans Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, and Joe with thematic logic, Hogan presents the slapstick heroes with affection and celebration. Beginning with a biographical and career time line, Hogan establishes their origins with director Jules White in the Cohn brothers' Columbia Studio. He organizes the shorts around recurring themes--for example, sports, high society, show business. Though the book primarily provides plot descriptions with snippets of funny dialogue, three sections offer rich veins of cultural significance--those on the Stooges' rewriting history, engaging in war, and traveling abroad. Readers will delight in these clowns' mindless antics, and the pristine and rare photographs will elicit grins. Summing Up: Recommended.
