Great Lakes Lighthouses Encyclopedia

Fifteen years of field exploration, interviews, and research in numerous local and national repositories and with the US and Canadian coast guards yielded frequently contradictory data that the authors compiled as a labor of love. The result is a well-illustrated, logically organized reference tool on the lighthouses of the five Great Lakes. The introduction includes a brief history of the building and function of lighthouses in the Great Lakes, their administration, typologies, and personnel. Progressing westward from Lake Ontario to Lake Superior, and further divided between the US and Canadian coasts on four lakes, the entries are listed alphabetically under color-coded sections and numbered to refer to section maps. Each entry sets up the lighthouse's geographical and historical context, describes the structure (including technical specifications), and concludes with a list of known keepers. Most entries include at least one color photograph (black-and-white photographs or drawings for structures no longer extant). The short bibliography focuses primarily on local sources. The index includes topical entries interfiled with a complete list of the lighthouses. Although the handsome Great Lakes map preceding the introduction lacks precision, the work will be very useful for transportation, architecture, local, and comprehensive collections. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. M. Nilsen Indiana University South Bend
