Mitchell (director of library svcs., Dickinson Coll.) and Seiden (coll. librarian, Swarthmore Coll.) have assembled a veritable all-star lineup of contributors for this volume that examines self-study and external reviews in academic libraries. Like other recent publications, a dearth of literature on challenges and opportunities related to self-study and external reviews served as the impetus for this volume. Although this is a comprehensive overview of the topic, it is not a step-by-step, how-to manual. Chapters can be read in a stand-alone fashion, but they combine to provide a foundation for initiating, implementing, and completing the self-study and review processes. The examination of assessment methods and metrics could be of use even in academic libraries that are not embarking on self-study or external review. VERDICT New administrators will find this volume to be invaluable for learning to think about how to capture data that will promote library services and demonstrate value-added activities. Any librarian or library staff member who is interested in leading from within will also find this volume to be useful in gaining a glimpse of the needs and priorities of both campus and library administrators.-Amanda Folk, Univ. of Pittsburgh Lib., Greensburg © Copyright 2016.
