Though still most closely associated with American cities, gangs are an entrenched, worldwide phenomenon that play a significant role in a wide range of activities, from drug dealing to extortion to religious and political violence. In A World of Gangs, John Hagedorn explores this international proliferation of the urban gang as a consequence of the ravages of globalization. Looking closely at gang formation in three world cities-Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, and Capetown-he discovers that some gangs have institutionalized as a strategy to confront a hopeless cycle of poverty, racism, and oppression. In particular, Hagedorn reveals, the nihilistic appeal of gangsta rap and its street ethic of survival "by any means necessary" provides vital insights into the ideology and persistence of gangs around the world. This groundbreaking work concludes on a hopeful note. Proposing ways in which gangs might be encouraged to overcome their violent tendencies, Hagedorn appeals to community leaders to use the urgency, outrage, and resistance common to both gang life and hip-hop in order to bring gangs into broader movements for social justice.

Boys adrift : the five factors driving the growing epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men / by Sax, Leonard.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 279-331) and index.The riddle -- The first factor : changes at school -- The second factor : video games -- The third factor : medications for ADHD -- The fourth factor : endocrine disruptors -- End result : failure to launch -- The fifth factor : the revenge of the forsaken gods -- Detox.An updated version of his best seller, Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on his vast clinical experience to propose an entirely original view of why boys and young men are continuing to fail in school and at home. He argues that a combination of social, cultural, and biological factors is creating an environment that is literally toxic to boys, ranging from environmental estrogens to the over-prescription of ADHD drugs. And he presents practical solutions-- from new ways of controlling boys' use of video games, to innovative (and workable) education reforms.

Boys & sex : young men on hookups, love, porn, consent, and navigating the new masculinity / by Orenstein, Peggy,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction: what about the boys? -- Welcome to Dick School -- If it exists, there is porn of it -- Are you experienced? Life and love in a hookup culture -- Get used to it: gay, trans, and queer guys -- Heads you lose, tails I win: boys of color in a white world -- I know I'm a good guy, but... -- All guys want it, don't they? -- A better man -- Deep breath: talking to boys.Today's young men are steeped in the distorted media images and binary stereotypes of female sexiness and toxic masculinity which shape how they, too, navigate sexual and emotional relationships. Orenstein uses a mix of anecdote and research to reveal how young men understand and negotiate the new rules of physical and emotional intimacy, taking an unprecedented look at the myriad factors that are shaping boys' ideas of sex, girls, and masculinity. The result is a provocative and paradigm-shifting work that offers a much-needed vision of how boys can truly move forward as better men.

The philosopher's flight : a novel / by Miller, Tom,1980-;
"Eighteen-year-old Robert Weekes is a practitioner of empirical philosophy--an arcane, female-dominated branch of science used to summon the wind, shape clouds of smoke, heal the injured, and even fly. Though he dreams of fighting in the Great War as the first male in the elite US Sigilry Corps Rescue and Evacuation Service--a team of flying medics--Robert is resigned to mixing batches of philosophical chemicals and keeping the books for the family business in rural Montana, where his mother, a former soldier and vigilante, aids the locals. When a deadly accident puts his philosophical abilities to the test, Robert rises to the occasion and wins a scholarship to study at Radcliffe College, an all-women's school. At Radcliffe, Robert hones his skills and strives to win the respect of his classmates, a host of formidable, unruly women. Robert falls hard for Danielle Hardin, a disillusioned young war hero turned political radical. However, Danielle's activism and Robert's recklessness attract the attention of the same fanatical anti-philosophical group that Robert's mother fought years before. With their lives in mounting danger, Robert and Danielle band together with a team of unlikely heroes to fight for Robert's place among the next generation of empirical philosophers--and for philosophy's very survival against the men who would destroy it."--
