The First World War / by Strachan, Hew.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 345-354) and index.Introduction -- To arms -- Under the eagle -- Global war -- Jihad -- Shackled to a corpse -- Breaking the deadlock -- Blockade -- Revolution -- Germany's last gamble -- War without end."It is almost a century since the outbreak of the First World War, yet as military historian Hew Strachan argues in this brilliant and authoritative history, the legacy of the "war to end all wars" is with us still. Written in crisp, compelling prose and enlivened with vivid photographs -- including early color photographs -- The First World War re-creates this world-altering conflict both on and off the battlefield. Strachan offers a fresh and truly global perspective on how the Great War not only redrew the map of the world but also set in motion the most dangerous conflicts of today, especially in such hot spots as the Middle East and Balkans. Deeply learned and powerfully written, The First World War is a landmark work of contemporary history"--Publisher description.

The First World War : a complete history / by Gilbert, Martin,1936-;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 544-554) and index.At 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo, the twentieth century could be said to have been born. The repercussions of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand -- Emperor Franz Josef's nephew and heir apparent -- by a Bosnian Serb are with us to this day. The immediate aftermath of that act was war. Global in extent, it would last almost five years and leave five million civilian casualties and more than nine million military dead. On both the Allied and Central Powers sides, losses -- missing, wounded, dead -- were enormous. After the war, barely a town or village in Europe was without its monument to the dead. The war also left us with new technologies of death: tanks, planes, and submarines; reliable rapid-fire machine guns and artillery; motorized cavalry. It ushered in new tactics of warfare: shipping convoys and U-boat packs, dog fights and reconnaissance air support. And it bequeathed to us terrors we still cannot control: poison gas and chemical warfare, strategic bombing of civilian targets, massacres and atrocities against entire population groups. But most of all, it changed our world. In its wake, empires toppled, monarchies fell, whole political systems realigned. Instabilities became institutionalized, enmities enshrined. Revolution swept to power ideologies of the left and right. And the social order shifted seismically. Manners, mores, codes of behavior; literature and the arts; education and class distinctions: all underwent a vast sea change. In all these ways, the twentieth century could be said to have been born on the morning of June 28, 1914. Now, in a companion volume to his acclaimed The Second World War, Martin Gilbert weaves together all of these elements to create a stunning, dramatic, and informative narrative. The First World War is everything we have come to expect from the scholar the Times Literary Supplement placed "in the first rank of contemporary historians."Prelude to war -- Wild with joy -- The opening struggle -- From Mons to the Marne -- Digging in : the start of trench warfare -- Towards the first Christmas : mud and slime and vermin -- Stalemate and the search for breakthroughs -- The Gallipolli landing -- The entente in danger -- The central powers in the ascendant -- The continuing failure of the entente -- This war will end at Verdun -- Europe is mad : the world is mad -- The Battle of the Somme : it is going to be a bloody holocaust -- War on every front -- The intensification of the war -- War, desertion, mutiny -- Stalemate in the west, turmoil in the east -- Battle at Passachendaele : revolution in Russia -- The terms of war and peace -- The Central Powers on the verge of triumph -- Germany's last great onslaught -- The battle, the battle, nothing else counts -- The allies counter-attack -- The turn of the tide -- The collapse of the Central Powers -- The final armistice -- Peacemaking and remembrance -- ... to the memory of that great company

The Great War at sea : a naval history of the First World War / by Sondhaus, Lawrence,1958-;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 371-380) and index.Ambition, ideology, and arms races -- Preparing for war -- Global prelude -- European waters, 1914-15 -- Submarine warfare: the great experiment, 1915 -- Combined operations, 1915 -- The year of Jutland: Germany's fleet sorties, 1916 -- Submarine warfare: the great gamble, 1917-18 -- War and Revolution, 1917 -- Final operations -- Conclusion: peace and naval disarmament.This is a major new naval history of the First World War, which reveals the decisive contribution of the war at sea to Allied victory. In a truly global account, Lawrence Sondhaus traces the course of the campaigns in the North Sea, Black Sea, Atlantic, Adriatic, Baltic, and Mediterranean and examines the role of critical innovations in the design and performance of ships, wireless communication, and firepower. He charts how Allied supremacy led the Central Powers to attempt to revolutionize naval warfare by pursuing unrestricted submarine warfare, ultimately prompting the United States to enter the war. Victory against the submarine challenge, following their earlier success in sweeping the seas of German cruisers and other surface raiders, left the Allies free to use the world's sea lanes to transport supplies and troops to Europe from overseas territories, and eventually from the United States, which proved a decisive factory in their ultimate victory.

The Great War : A combat history of the first world war / by Hart, Peter.;
Includes notes (p. 477-492) and index (p. 495-522).The Road to War -- The Western Front, 1914 -- The Eastern Front, 1914 -- The Sea War, 1914-15 -- The Western Front, 1915 -- The Eastern Front, 1915 -- Gallipoli, 1915 -- Salonika, 1915-18 -- The Western Front, 1916 -- The Eastern Front, 1916 -- The Sea War, 1916 -- Mesopotamia, 1914-18 -- The Eastern Front, 1917-18 -- The Sea War, 1917-18 -- The Western Front 1917 -- Italy, 1915-18 -- The Sinai and Palestinian Campaigns, 1915-18 -- The Western Front, 1918 -- A World Without War?."The First World War altered the nature of warfare, and by so doing changed the landscape of the modern world. Peter Hart provides a masterful combat history of this global conflict, focusing on the decisive engagements and exploring the challenges faced by the commanders on all sides. He surveys the belligerent nations, analyzing their strengths, weaknesses, and strategic imperatives. He shows that there was no easy way to victory for either of the great power blocks, and that the decisions of military commanders were based on the information they had at the time. "The Great War" concentrates on the Western and Eastern fronts, where the battles more often had the potential-in theory, at least-to end the war; but it also explores important peripheral events, such as the war at sea, the fighting in Mesopotamia and Palestine, and the Italian front. Sweeping in scope and exhibiting a depth of research and narrative dexterity, this is an essential single-volume account of the events of 1914-1918.
