Wounds not healed by time : the power of repentance and forgiveness / by Schimmel, Solomon.;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 251-257) and indexes.How should we respond to injuries done to us and to the hurts that we inflict on others? In this book Solomon Schimmel guides us through the meanings of justice, forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation. In doing so, he probes to the core of the human encounter with evil, drawing on religious traditions, psychology, philosophy, and the personal experiences of both perpetrators and of victims. Christianity, Judaism and Islam call for forgiveness and repentance in our relations with others. Yet, as Schimmel points out, there are significant differences between them as to when and whom to forgive. Is forgiving always more moral than refusing to forgive? Is it ever immoral to forgive? When is repentance a pre-condition for forgiveness, and what does repentance entail? Schimmel explores these questions in diverse contexts, ranging from conflicts in a marriage and personal slights we experience every day to enormous crimes such as the Holocaust. He applies insights on forgiveness and repentance to the Middle East, post-apartheid South Africa, inter-religious relationships, and the criminal justice system. Schimmel also provides practical strategies to help us forgive and repent, preparing the way for healing and reconciliation between individuals and groups.

Scholar Stephen Prothero argues that it is time to replace naïve hopes of interreligious unity with deeper knowledge of religious differences. He maintains that each religion attempts to solve a different human problem, and examines each of these traditions on its own terms to create an indispensable guide for anyone who wants to better understand the big questions.

Christianity : the first three thousand years / by MacCulloch, Diarmaid.; MacCulloch, Diarmaid.History of Christianity.;
"Winner of the Cundill Prize in History" -- Cover.Includes bibliographical references (p. [1017]-1112) and index.We live in a time of tremendous religious awareness, when both believers and non-believers are deeply engaged by questions of religion and tradition. This ambitious book ranges back to the origins of the Hebrew Bible and covers the world, following the three main strands of the Christian faith, to teach modern readers how Jesus' message spread and how the New Testament was formed. We follow the Christian story to all corners of the globe, filling in often neglected accounts of conversions and confrontations in Africa and Asia. And we discover the roots of the faith that galvanized America, charting the rise of the evangelical movement from its origins in Germany and England. We meet monks and crusaders, heretics and saints, slave traders and abolitionists, and discover Christianity's essential role in driving the Enlightenment and the Age of Exploration, and shaping the course of World Wars I and II.--From publisher description of 2010 ed.A millennium of beginnings (1000 BCE-100 CE).
