In imperial Britain between the wars, that was problem enough, but Bertie suffered from a chronic stammer that made his public appearances painful for everyone. In an age of radio, the monarch has become a symbol, which means that the King speaks to his people--regularly. Bertie and his wife, the high-spirited Princess Elizabeth find their way to an Australian-born speech therapist and amateur actor named Lionel Logue. Logue isn't a doctor, has no academic credentials, and is viewed by proper authorities as a charlatan. Oddly enough, each of these men is a desperate misfit badly in need of a new friend and a bit more self-esteem. A real friend, it seems, was exactly the medicine the future king required.MPAA rating: Rated R for some language.Academy Awards, 2010: Best Picture (Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers); Best Actor in a Leading Role (Colin Firth); Best Director (Tom Hooper); Best Writing (Original Screenplay) (Screenplay by David Seidler).Golden Globe Awards, 2011: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama (Colin Firth).BAFTA Film Awards, 2011: Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music (Alexandre Desplat); Best Screenplay (Original) (David Seidler); Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush); Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter); Best Actor (Colin Firth); Best Film (Gareth Unwin, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Producers); Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

- Musicophilia : tales of music and the brain / by Sacks, Oliver W.;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 353-367) and index.Music can move us to the heights or depths of emotion. It can persuade us to buy something, or remind us of our first date. It can lift us out of depression when nothing else can. It can get us dancing to its beat. But the power of music goes much, much further. Indeed, music occupies more areas of our brain than language does--humans are a musical species. Oliver Sacks's compassionate, compelling tales of people struggling to adapt to different neurological conditions have fundamentally changed the way we think of our own brains, and of the human experience. Here, he examines the powers of music through the individual experiences of patients, musicians, and everyday people. Music is irresistible, haunting, and unforgettable, and Oliver Sacks tells us why.--From publisher description.Haunted by music. A bolt from the blue : sudden musicophilia ; A strangely familiar feeling : musical seizures ; Fear of music : musicogenic epilepsy ; Music on the brain : imagery and imagination ; Brainworms, sticky music and catchy tunes ; Musical hallucinations -- A range of musicality. A daily break: respite and personal care for the care giver / Vivian E. Greenberg -- From loss to life: Managing emotions and grief / Rev. David Cotton.Although the public most often associates dementia with Alzheimer's disease, the medical profession now distinguishes various types of "other" dementias. This is one of the only guides dealing with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), one of the largest groups of non-Alzheimer's dementias. The contributors are either specialists in their fields or have exceptional hands-on experience with FTD sufferers. Beginning with a focus on the medical facts, the first part defines and explores FTD as an illness distinct from Alzheimer's disease. Also considered are clinical and medical care issues and practices, as well as such topics as finding a medical team and rehabilitation interventions. The section on managing care examines the daily care routine including exercise, socialization, adapting the home environment, and behavioral issues. In the caregiver resources section, the contributors identify professional and government assistance programs along with private resources and legal options. The final section focuses on the caregiver, in particular the need for respite and the challenge of managing emotions. This completely revised edition will help both healthcare professionals and caregivers of someone suffering from frontotemporal degeneration.
