Bullies and mean girls in popular culture / by Oppliger, Patrice A.;
The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem. -- From publisher's website.Includes bibliographical references and index.Bullies and the media -- Mean girls and the media -- Film bullies -- Film mean girls -- Television bullies -- Television mean girls -- Television sitcoms -- Glee's bullies and mean girls -- Documentaries and talk shows -- Television reality shows -- Children's programs -- Children's literature -- Alternative media -- Pro-social and anti-bullying messages -- Analysis and recommendations.

In imperial Britain between the wars, that was problem enough, but Bertie suffered from a chronic stammer that made his public appearances painful for everyone. In an age of radio, the monarch has become a symbol, which means that the King speaks to his people--regularly. Bertie and his wife, the high-spirited Princess Elizabeth find their way to an Australian-born speech therapist and amateur actor named Lionel Logue. Logue isn't a doctor, has no academic credentials, and is viewed by proper authorities as a charlatan. Oddly enough, each of these men is a desperate misfit badly in need of a new friend and a bit more self-esteem. A real friend, it seems, was exactly the medicine the future king required.MPAA rating: Rated R for some language.Academy Awards, 2010: Best Picture (Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers); Best Actor in a Leading Role (Colin Firth); Best Director (Tom Hooper); Best Writing (Original Screenplay) (Screenplay by David Seidler).Golden Globe Awards, 2011: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama (Colin Firth).BAFTA Film Awards, 2011: Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music (Alexandre Desplat); Best Screenplay (Original) (David Seidler); Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush); Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter); Best Actor (Colin Firth); Best Film (Gareth Unwin, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Producers); Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.

Obsession : a history / by Davis, Lennard J.,1949-;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 247-276) and index.Origins of obsession -- The emergence of obsession -- Specialization as monomania -- Never done: compulsive writing, graphomania, bibliomania -- Freud and obsession as the gateway to psychoanalysis -- Obsessive sex and love -- Obsession and visual art -- OCD: now and forever -- Conclusion: So what? So what? So what? So what? and other obsessive thoughts.From the Publisher: We live in an age of obsession. Not only are we hopelessly devoted to our work, strangely addicted to our favorite television shows, and desperately impassioned about our cars, we admire obsession in others: we demand that lovers be infatuated with one another in films, we respond to the passion of single-minded musicians, we cheer on driven athletes. To be obsessive is to be American; to be obsessive is to be modern. But obsession is not only a phenomenon of modern existence: it is a medical category-both a pathology and a goal. Behind this paradox lies a fascinating history, which Lennard Davis tells in Obsession. Beginning with the roots of the disease in demonic possession and its secular successors, Davis traces the evolution of obsessive behavior from a social and religious fact of life into a medical and psychiatric problem. From obsessive aspects of professional specialization to obsessive sex and nymphomania, no variety of obsession eludes Davis's graceful analysis. Obsession also considers the clinical definition of the condition: Davis investigates the huge increase (estimates suggest up to 600-fold) in diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder over the past thirty years. Surveying the many ways in which doctors today treat OCD, he points out the limitations of and contradictions within the biological definitions of the disease. Impassioned, witty, and learned, Obsession is for anyone-from compulsive hand washers to professional psychologists-who has been fascinated by, struggled with, or cultivated obsession.
