Timefulness : [electronic resource] : How thinking like a geologist can help save the world. by Bjornerud, Marcia.; Eby, Tanya.;
Narrator: Tanya Eby.Few of us have any conception of the enormous timescales in our planet's long history, and this narrow perspective underlies many of the environmental problems we are creating for ourselves. The passage of nine days, which is how long a drop of water typically stays in Earth's atmosphere, is something we can easily grasp. But spans of hundreds of years-the time a molecule of carbon dioxide resides in the atmosphere-approach the limits of our comprehension. Our everyday lives are shaped by processes that vastly predate us, and our habits will in turn have consequences that will outlast us by generations. Timefulness reveals how knowing the rhythms of Earth's deep past and conceiving of time as a geologist does can give us the perspective we need for a more sustainable future. Marcia Bjornerud shows how geologists chart the planet's past, explaining how we can determine the pace of solid Earth processes such as mountain building and erosion and comparing them with the more unstable rhythms of the oceans and atmosphere. These overlapping rates of change in the Earth system-some fast, some slow-demand a poly-temporal worldview, one that Bjornerud calls "timefulness."Requires OverDrive Listen (file size: N/A KB) or OverDrive app (file size: 161613 KB).

Notes on nursing : [electronic resource] : What it is, and what it is not. by Nightingale, Florence.;
"My heart always sinks within me when I hear the good housewife, of every class, say, 'I assure you the bed has been well slept in: and I can only hope it is not true. What? Is the bed already saturated with somebody else's damp before my patient comes to exhale in it his own damp? Has it not had a single chance to be aired? No, not one. It has been slept in every night." From the best known work of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the originator and founder of modern nursing, comes a collection of notes that played an important part in the much needed revolution in the field of nursing. For the first time it was brought to the attention of those caring for the sick that their responsibilities covered not only the administration of medicines and the application of poultices, but the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet. Miss Nightingale is outspoken on these subjects as well as on other factors that she considers essential to good nursing. But, whatever her topic, her main concern and attention is always on the patient and his needs. One is impressed with the fact that the fundamental needs of the sick as observed by Miss Nightingale are amazingly similar today (even though they are generally taken for granted now) to what they were over 100 years ago when this book was written. For this reason, this little volume is as practical as it is interesting and entertaining. It will be an inspiration to the student nurse, refreshing and stimulating to the experienced nurse, and immensely helpful to anyone caring for the sick.Electronic reproduction.

Collected writings / by Paine, Thomas,1737-1809.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 854-885) and index.Common sense -- The crisis, and other pamphlets, articles, and letters -- Rights of man -- The age of reason."I know not whether any man in the world", wrote John Adams in 1805, "has had more influence on its inhabitants or affairs for the last thirty years than Tom Paine". The impassioned democratic voice of the Age of Revolution, Paine wrote for his mass audience with vigor, clarity, and "common sense". This is the first major new edition of his work in 50 years, and the most comprehensive single-volume collection of his writings available. Emphasizing Paine's American career, it brings together his best-known works - Common Sense, The American Crisis, Rights of Man, The Age of Reason - along with scores of letters, articles, and pamphlets. Paine came to America in 1774 at age 37 after a life of obscurity and failure in England. Within 14 months he published Common Sense, the most influential pamphlet of the American Revolution and began a career that would see him prosecuted in England, imprisoned and nearly executed in France, and hailed and reviled in the American nation he helped create. In Common Sense Paine set forth an inspiring vision of an independent America as an asylum for freedom and an example of popular self-government in a world oppressed by despotism and hereditary privilege. The American Crisis, begun during "the times that try men's souls" in 1776, is a masterpiece of popular pamphleteering in which Paine vividly reports current developments, taunts and ridicules British adversaries, and enjoins his readers to remember the immense stakes of their struggle. Among the many other items included in the volume are the combative "Forester" letters, written in reply to a Tory critic of Common Sense, and several pieces concerning the French Revolution, including an incisiveargument against executing Louis XVI.

Mad science : psychiatric coercion, diagnosis, and drugs / by Kirk, Stuart A.,1945-; Gomory, Tomi.; Cohen, David,1954-;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Illusions of psychiatric progress -- The history and historians of madness -- The therapeutic coercion of the mad in the community -- And DSM said : let there be disorder -- The failure of descriptive diagnosis -- Dancing with drugs -- From drugs to medications and back -- The structure of mad science."When it comes to understanding and treating madness, distortions of research are not rare, misinterpretation of data is not isolated, and bogus claims of success are not voiced by isolated researchers seeking aggrandizement. This book's detailed analyses of coercion and community treatment, diagnosis, and psychopharmacology reveals that these characteristics of bad science are endemic, institutional, and protected in psychiatry. This is mad science. Mad Science argues that the fundamental claims of modern American psychiatry are not based on convincing research, but on misconceived, flawed, and distorted science. The authors address multiple paradoxes in American mental health, including the remaking of coercion into scientific psychiatric treatment in the community, the adoption of an unscientific diagnostic system that now controls the distribution of services, and how drug treatments have failed to improve the mental health outcome." -- Publisher's description.
