Child psychology : a very short introduction / by Goswami, Usha C.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.This Very Short Introduction provides an up-to-date, authoritative, and accessible guide to modern child psychology, from birth to early adolescence. Beginning with infancy, Usha Goswami considers the process of attachment and 'bonding', showing how secure attachments enable the development of self-understanding. Exploring childhood learning, ranging from aspects of language and thinking to cognitive reasoning, Goswami looks at how babies and toddlers develop an understanding of the physical, biological, and social worlds, and develop complex abilities like language and morality. Demonstrating how learning is shaped by the environments surrounding the child; at home, school, with peers, and in wider society, Goswami emphasizes the importance of childhood friendships and siblings for psychological development. Introducing the key theories in child psychology, Goswami explains why children develop as they do and how society can further optimize their development through the adolescent years.Babies and what they know -- Learning about the outside world -- Learning language -- Friendships, families, pretend play, and the imagination -- Learning and remembering, reading and number -- The learning brain -- Theories and neurobiology of development.

The way of the mindful warrior : embrace authentic mindfulness for wellbeing, wisdom, and awareness / by Van Gordon, William,author.; Shonin, Edo,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Allowing the mind to breathe -- Mindfulness and the inverted hallucination -- The mindful warrior's code -- Carry your meditation cushion with you -- A spiritual affair -- A sticky mind -- The compassionate heart -- Letting go -- Mindfulness of birth, mindfulness of death -- The empty self -- The mindful warrior's lineage -- Do you know who I am?The Way of the Mindful Warrior provides a fresh, authentic, and structured path to using mindfulness to embrace living in awareness and reconnecting with our innermost nature of peace, wisdom, and compassion. Mindfulness is a 2,500-yaer-old Buddhist meditation practice that involves focusing awareness on the present moment, the only place where an individual can truly embrace and experience life. In recent decades, mindfulness has gained popularity among scientists, health care practitioners, and the public more generally. An abundance of popular books has subsequently emerged providing different interpretations of how to practice mindfulness and apply it in daily-living contexts. However, most current approaches to mindfulness have removed it from its traditional spiritual context or overlook important scientific insights from research into this ancient contemplative technique. The Way of Mindful Warrior addresses this oversight and integrates the traditional Buddhist teachings on mindfulness with emerging insights from the scientific study of mindfulness, wellbeing, and the human mind. This book is timely and presents a fresh, easily digestible, and structured path to using mindfulness not only as a tool for coping with the stresses and strains of contemporary living but also as a means of cultivating wellbeing and flourishing as a human being.
