Nestle follows the trail of tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China and along the supply chain to their introduction into feed for pigs, chickens, and fish in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world. What begins as a problem "merely" for cats and dogs soon becomes an issue of tremendous concern to everyone. Nestle uncovers unexpected connections among the food supplies for pets, farm animals, and people and identifies glaring gaps in the global oversight of food safety.

Twelve years a slave / [electronic resource]. by Northup, Solomon.;
Born a free man in New York State in 1808, Solomon Northup was kidnapped in Washington, DC, in 1841. He spent the next 12 harrowing years of his life as a slave on a Louisiana cotton plantation. During this time he was frequently abused and often afraid for his life. After regaining his freedom in 1853, Northup decided to publish this gripping autobiographical account of his captivity. As an educated man, Northup was able to present an exceptionally detailed and accurate description of slave life and plantation society. Indeed, this book is probably the fullest, most realistic picture of the "peculiar institution" during the three decades before the Civil War. Moreover, Northup tells his story both from the viewpoint of an outsider, who had experienced 30 years of freedom and dignity in the United States before his capture, and as a slave, reduced to total bondage and submission. Very few personal accounts of American slavery were written by slaves with a similar history. Published in 1853, Northup's book found a ready audience and almost immediately became a bestseller. Aside from its vivid depiction of the detention, transportation, and sale of slaves, Twelve Years a Slave is admired for its classic accounts of cotton and sugar production, its uncannily precise recall of people, times, and places, and the compelling details that re-create the daily routine of slaves in the Gulf South.Electronic reproduction.

Girls like us : [electronic resource] : Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon - and the Journey of a Generation. by Weller, Sheila.; Ericksen, Susan.;
Narrator: Susan Ericksen.Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct: King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now-mythic generation known as "the sixties"-the female version-but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliche. The history of the women of that generation had never been written-until now-and it is told through the resonant lives and emblematic songs of Mitchell, Simon, and King. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, this alternating biography reads like a novel-except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them-confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.Requires OverDrive Listen (file size: N/A KB) or OverDrive app (file size: 643898 KB).

Driving Honda : inside the world's most innovative car company / by Rothfeder, Jeffrey.;
" A journalist's inside look at what makes Honda the most consistently innovative and effective automaker. In recent years Toyota has received more than its fair share of attention for its "lean" manufacturing model, its sales triumphs, and its infamous recalls. But when it comes to consistent excellence, archrival Honda is more admirable, and more interesting. Award-winning journalist Jeffrey Rothfeder digs deep into Honda's culture, management, and global strategy to find what makes the company tick. He offers a behind-the-scenes look at its revolutionary factory in Lincoln, Alabama, a paradigm of Honda's unique flexible manufacturing system. At Lincoln, several different types of cars can be produced on a single assembly line any given hour, and the compact plant manufactures up to 300,000 vehicles and engines a year, making it one of the world's most productive. Drawing on access to dozens of highlevel Honda executives, Rothfeder identifies the three core principles that every Honda employee shares, and shows how the company's flexible manufacturing model, unique supply chain management techniques, and unorthodox (and contentious) daily brainstorming meetings are just a few keys to its success. Rothfeder makes a convincing case that Honda should serve as the model for a manufacturing rebirth in America.
