Hint : not by stonewalling new high-tech models and locking up the content.Recounts for the first time the epic story of the precipitous rise and fall of the recording industry over the past three decades, when the success of the CD turned the music business into one of the most glamorous, high-profile industries in the world--and the advent of file sharing brought it to its knees. In a fast-paced account full of larger-than-life personalities, journalist Knopper shows that, after the wealth and excess of the '80s and '90s, Sony, Warner, and the other big players brought about their own downfall through years of denial and bad decisions in the face of dramatic advances in technology. Based on interviews with more than two hundred music industry sources--from Warner Music chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. to renegade Napster creator Shawn Fanning--Knopper is the first to offer such a detailed and sweeping contemporary history of the industry's wild ride.

- Pop music, pop culture / by Rojek, Chris.;
Includes bibliographical references (p. [221]-231) and indexes.Why 'pop', not 'popular'? -- The Field. The field of pop music study ; The urban-industrial backbeat ; Theoretical Perspectives. Structuralist approaches ; Agency approaches -- The Mode of Production. Roots ; Corporations and independents ; Artists, managers and audiences -- Technology and media -- Co-operative labour, Inc.What is happening to pop music and pop culture? Synthesizers, samplers and MDI systems have allowed anyone with basic computing skills to make music. Exchange is now automatic and weightless with the result that the High Street record store is dying. MySpace, Twitter and You Tube are now more important publicity venues for new bands than the concert tour routine. Unauthorized consumption in the form of illegal downloading has created a financial crisis in the industry. The old postwar industrial planning model of pop, which centralized control in the hands of major record corporations, and divided the market into neat segments, is dissolving in front of our eyes. This book offers readers a comprehensive guide to understanding pop music today. It provides a clear survey of the field and a description of core concepts. The main theoretical approaches to the analysis of pop are described and critically assessed. The book includes a major investigation of the revolutionary changes in the production, exchange and consumption of pop music that are currently underway.

- Pop song piracy : disobedient music distribution since 1929 / by Kernfeld, Barry Dean,1950-;

Tin Pan Alley's near-perfect distribution system ; Bootlegging song sheets ; The content and uses of song sheets ; Fake books and music photocopying -- pt. 2. Broadcasting. Pirate radio in Northwestern Europe -- pt. 3. Recordings. Illegal copying of phonograph records ; Illegal copying of tapes ; Bootleg albums as unauthorized new releases ; Illegal copying of compact discs ; Song sharing."The music industry's ongoing battle against digital piracy is just the latest skirmish in a long conflict over who has the right to distribute music. Starting with music publishers' efforts to stamp out bootleg compilations of lyric sheets in 1929, Barry Kernfeld's Pop Song Piracy details nearly a century of disobedient music distribution from song sheets to MP3s. In the 1940s and '50s, Kernfeld reveals, song sheets were succeeded by fake books, unofficial volumes of melodies and lyrics for popular songs that were a key tool for musicians. Music publishers attempted to wipe out fake books, but after their efforts proved unsuccessful they published their own. Pop Song Piracy shows that this pattern of disobedience, prohibition, and assimilation recurred in each conflict over unauthorized music distribution, from European pirate radio stations to bootlegged live shows. Beneath this pattern, Kernfeld argues, there exists a complex give and take between distribution methods that merely copy existing songs (such as counterfeit CDs) and ones that transform songs into new products (such as file sharing). Ultimately, he contends, it was the music industry's persistent lagging behind in creating innovative products that led to the very piracy it sought to eliminate"--Provided by publisher.

- George Frideric Handel : a life with friends / by Harris, Ellen T.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 391-409), discography (pages 381-387) and index.Introductions : Handel and his friends -- Before London -- Politics, patronage, and pension -- Commerce and trade -- Music at home -- Marriage, wealth, and social status -- Ambition, law, and friendship -- Making and collecting -- Religion and charity -- Sickness and death -- Wills and legacies.During his lifetime, the sounds of Handel's music reached from court to theater, echoed in cathedrals, and filled crowded taverns, but the man himself - known to most as the composer of Messiah - is a bit of a mystery. Though he took meticulous care of his musical manuscripts and even provided for their preservation on his death, very little of an intimate nature survives. One document - Handel's will - offers us a narrow window into his personal life. In it, he remembers not only family and close colleagues but also neighborhood friends. In search of the private man behind the public figure, Ellen T. Harris has spent years tracking down the letters, diaries, personal accounts, legal cases, and other documents connected to these bequests. The result is a tightly woven tapestry of London in the first half of the eighteenth century, one that interlaces vibrant descriptions of Handel's music with stories of loyalty, cunning, and betrayal. With this wholly new approach, Harris has achieved something greater than biography. Layering the interconnecting stories of Handel's friends like the subjects and countersubjects of a fugue, Harris introduces us to an ambitious, shrewd, generous, brilliant, and flawed man, hiding in full view behind his public persona.
