Cadets on campus : history of military schools of the United States / by Coulter, John A.,1953-;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Since the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1802, more than eight hundred military schools have existed in the country. The vast majority have closed their doors, been absorbed into other educational institutions, or otherwise faded away, but others soldier on, adapting to changing times and changing educational needs. While many individual institutions have had their histories written or their stories told, to date no single book has attempted to explore the full scope of the military school in American history. Cadets on Campus is the first book to cover the origin, history, and culture of the nation's military schools--secondary and collegiate--and this breadth of coverage will appeal to historians and alumni alike. Author John Alfred Coulter identifies several key figures who were pivotal to the formation of military education, including Sylvanus Thayer, the "father of West Point," and Alden Partridge, the founder of the school later known as Norwich University, the first private military school in the country. He also reveals that military schools were present across the nation, despite the conventional wisdom that most military schools, and, indeed, the culture that surrounds them were limited to the South. Coulter addresses the shuttering of military schools in the era after the Vietnam War and then notes a curious resurgence of interest of military education since the turn of the century. -- Back cover.Military school culture -- The long road to West Point -- Early West Point and Captain Partridge's military school movement -- Sylvanus Thayer and the military school culture -- Francis Smith, Virginia Military Institute, and Southern military education -- Military education and the Civil War -- The United States Naval Academy and maritime academies -- The "lost cause" and the Grand Army of the Republic -- Of sabers and scripture -- Tested by war, depression, and fire -- World War II through the 1950s -- Vietnam and the decline of the military school -- Resurgence of an old educational tradition -- Conclusions -- Appendix A: Military schools of the United States, 1802-2014 -- Appendix B: Military schools of the United States by category, 2014 -- Appendix C: Military schools of the United States, 1802-2014 -- Appendix D: Number of schools by type for each military school compared -- Appendix E: Selected military school alumni.

Arms and the university : military presence and the civic education of non-military students / by Downs, Donald Alexander.; Murtazashvili, Ilia,1975-;
"Alienation between the U.S. military and society has grown in recent decades. Such alienation is unhealthy, as it threatens both sufficient civilian control of the military and the long-standing ideal of the citizen soldier. Nowhere is this issue more predominant than at many major universities, which began turning their backs on the military during the chaotic years of the Vietnam War. Arms and the University probes various dimensions of this alienation, as well recent efforts to restore a closer relationship between the military and the university. Through theoretical and empirical analysis, Donald Alexander Downs and Ilia Murtazashvili show how a military presence on campus in the form of ROTC (including a case study of ROTC,♯s̥ return to Columbia and Harvard universities), military history, and national security studies can enhance the civic and liberal education of non-military students, and in the process help to bridge the civil-military gap"-- Provided by publisher.Includes bibliographical references and index.I. Fey, and Leah Ewing Ross -- Promoting organizational change to create a veteran-friendly campus : a case study /Jan Arminio and Tomoko Kudo Grabosky -- Conclusion : looking back, moving forward / Corey B. Rumann and Florence A. Hamrick.Over the past several years, veteran enrollment in universities, community colleges, and vocational programs has increased dramatically, with over a quarter million student veterans taking advantage of military-related educational benefits packages, which have become one of the few remaining federal sources of grant funds for students pursuing higher education. Yet existing literature on the topic harkens back to Vietnam era issues and practices, and current administrators and faculty members likely have little experience serving this population. Significant changes in higher education and wartime military personnel policies in the last 30 years necessitate a fresh look at how colleges and universities can best respond to the needs of student veterans. Examples of contemporary issues include current patterns of multiple deployments and returns and the accompanying stop-out and re-enrollment periods. Costs for students have risen, as have military educational benefit provisions and institutional incentives. Building upon the long history of educating veterans, this comprehensive volume offers the most up-to-date scholarship and practical program guidance to help student affairs professionals, academic administrators, and faculty understand, serve, and support student veterans. It offers recommendations for enhancing and strengthening current campus efforts in serving veterans, planning additional services or programs, and--perhaps most importantly--coordinating the efforts of potentially disparate campus-based services and programs with community-based or government-sponsored veterans' programs, services, and affiliated groups.
