A planet of viruses / by Zimmer, Carl,1966-;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 97-101) and index.Explore the hidden world of viruses, a world that each of us inhabits. Here the author, science writer and author of Discover magazine's blog The Loom, presents the latest research on how viruses hold sway over our lives and our biosphere, how viruses helped give rise to the first life forms, how viruses are producing new diseases, how we can harness viruses for our own ends, and how viruses will continue to control our fate for years to come. In this eye-opening tour through the frontiers of biology, where scientists are expanding our understanding of life as we know it, we learn that some treatments for the common cold do more harm to us than good; that the world's oceans are home to an astonishing number of viruses; and that the evolution of HIV is now in overdrive, spawning more mutated strains than we care to imagine.

The HPV vaccine controversy : sex, cancer, God, and politics : a guide for parents, women, men, and teenagers / by Krishnan, Shobha S.;
Includes bibliographical references (p. [195]-218) and index.The Human Papilloma Virus, so-called HPV, is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases. It is estimated that at least 50 percent of all sexually active people will be infected during their lifetimes. And while it may cause no symptoms in most cases, two strains of HPV cause some 70 percent of all cervical cancer. So it was with great fanfare that an HPV vaccine was announced in 2006--but controversy surrounds the vaccine, which is being recommended for girls as young as 9 and may be mandated by state governments. This book explains both the disease and the vaccine in lay terms. A longtime gynecologist and family physician, Krishnan also addresses the controversy, the pros and cons of anyone being inoculated, the need for booster shots, what is known about side effects, and whether or not it can protect boys from contracting or transmitting the virus, or getting genital warts.--From publisher description.The HPV vaccine controversy : science versus faith -- HPV transmission and natural history : a "silent" epidemic -- Risk factors and testing : knowledge is power -- Cancer, warts, and HPV : from head and neck lesions to cervical, penile, and anal diseases -- Emotional aspects and prevention of HPV : shame, blame, and absence of cure -- The new HPV vaccines : history, recommendations, and limitations -- HPV vaccines for males : the unsolved half of the equation -- FAQ's on HPV and the vaccines : excerpts from a university town hall meeting -- Parent's dilemma to vaccinate : a physician mother's perspective -- Vaccines on the global front : unique challenges and opportunities -- Glossary.
