When gay people get married : what happens when societies legalize same-sex marriage / by Badgett, M. V. Lee(Mary Virginia Lee);
Includes bibliographical references (p. 231-263) and index.Introduction : a different perspective -- Why marry? : the value of marriage -- Forsaking all other options -- The impact of gay marriage on heterosexuals -- Something borrowed : trying marriage on -- Something new : will marriage change gay people? -- Marriage dissent in the gay community -- Strange bedfellows : assessing alternatives to marriage -- The pace of change : are we moving too fast? -- Conclusion : marriage under renovation?"In When Gay People Get Married, noted scholar M. V. Lee Badgett offers a rare look at how gay marriage is actually working, by taking readers to a land where it has been legal for same-sex couples to marry since 2001: the Netherlands. Through interviews with married gay couples we learn about the often surprising changes to their relationships, and the reactions of their families and work colleagues. Moreover, Badgett shows how the institution itself has been altered, exploring how the concept of marriage itself has changed in the United States and the Netherlands." "The evidence from around the world shows both that marriage changes gay people more than gay people change marriage and that it is the most liberal countries and states making the first moves to recognize gay couples. In the end, Badgett demonstrates that allowing gay couples to marry does not destroy the institution of marriage and that many gay couples do benefit, in expected as well as surprising ways, from the legal, social, and political rights that the institution offers. When Gay People Get Married is a primer on the current state of the same-sex marriage debate, providing valuable new insights into the political, social, and personal stakes involved."--BOOK JACKET.

Stand by me : the forgotten history of gay liberation / by Downs, Jim,1973-;
Includes bibliographical references and index.The largest massacre of gay people in American history -- The gay religious movement -- The biography of a bookstore -- Gay American history -- The body politic -- "Prison sounds" -- Body language."Despite the tremendous gains of the LGBT movement in recent years, the history of gay life in this country remains poorly understood. According to conventional wisdom, gay liberation started with the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village in 1969. The 1970s represented a moment of triumph--both political and sexual--before the AIDS crisis in the subsequent decade, which, in the view of many, exposed the problems inherent in the so-called "gay lifestyle". In Stand by Me, the acclaimed historian Jim Downs rewrites the history of gay life in the 1970s, arguing that the decade was about much more than sex and marching in the streets. Drawing on a vast trove of untapped records at LGBT community centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia, Downs tells moving, revelatory stories of gay people who stood together--as friends, fellow believers, and colleagues--to create a sense of community among people who felt alienated from mainstream American life. As Downs shows, gay people found one another in the Metropolitan Community Church, a nationwide gay religious group; in the pages of the Body Politic, a newspaper that encouraged its readers to think of their sexuality as a political identity; at the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookstore, the hub of gay literary life in New York City; and at theaters putting on "Gay American History," a play that brought to the surface the enduring problem of gay oppression. These and many other achievements would be largely forgotten after the arrival in the early 1980s of HIV/AIDS, which allowed critics to claim that sex was the defining feature of gay liberation. This reductive narrative set back the cause of gay rights and has shaped the identities of gay people for decades. An essential act of historical recovery, Stand by Me shines a bright light on a triumphant moment, and will transform how we think about gay life in America from the 1970s into the present day."--Book jacket.

Pray the gay away : the extraordinary lives of Bible belt gays / by Barton, Bernadette.;
Includes bibliographical references (p. 239 -265) and index.Acknowledgments -- Introduction : "in the eyes of the lord" -- Welcome to the Bible belt -- "My parents disowned me" : family rejection -- "God would tell on me" : losing their religion -- "They don't know who I am" : the toxic closet -- "Going straight" : the ex-gay movement -- "Prepare to believe" : the creation museum -- "The opposite of faith is fear" : destruction and transformation -- "God can love all of me" : living the life -- What the future holds -- Notes -- References -- Index -- About the author.While some areas of the United States have made tremendous progress in securing rights for gay people, Bible Belt states lag behind. Barton argues that conventions of small town life, rules which govern Southern manners, and the power wielded by Christian institutions serve as a foundation for both passive and active homophobia in the Bible Belt. She explores how conservative Christian ideology reproduces homophobic attitudes and shares how Bible Belt gays negotiate these attitudes in their daily lives.
