Rewiring education : how technology can unlock every student's potential / by Couch, John D.,1947-; Towne, Jason,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Rewiring -- Design -- Potential -- Motivation -- Learning -- Spaces -- Challenges -- CBL -- Access -- Build -- Code -- Teaching -- Technology -- Transformative -- Futuristic."In Rewiring Education, Couch shares the professional lessons he's learned during his 50-plus years in education and technology. He takes us behind Apple's major research study, Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), and its follow-up (ACOT 2), highlighting the powerful effects of the Challenge-Based Learning framework. Going beyond Apple's walls, he also introduces us to some of the most extraordinary parents, educators, and entrepreneurs from around the world who have ignored the failed promises of memorization and, instead, utilize new science-backed methods and technologies that benefit all children, from those who struggle to honor students. Rewiring Education presents a bold vision for the future of education, looking at promising emerging technologies and how we--as parents, teachers, and voters--can ensure children are provided with opportunities and access to the relevant, creative, collaborative, and challenging learning environments they need to succeed"--Amazon.com.

Words onscreen : the fate of reading in a digital world / by Baron, Naomi S.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 277-294) and index.Nl;pr not long; please read: a preface -- "I hate books": words go digital -- Reading evolves -- Tl;dr: readers reshape writing -- The appeal of words onscreen -- The web ate my print option: one-off reading -- How social is reading? -- "It's not a book": the physical side of reading -- Your brain on hyper reading -- Faxing Tokyo: when cultures and markets meet -- The future of reading in a digital world -- Acknowledgments -- Notes -- References -- Index.Overview: People have been reading on computer screens for several decades now, predating popularization of personal computers and widespread use of the internet. But it was the rise of eReaders and tablets that caused digital reading to explode. In 2007, Amazon introduced its first Kindle. Three years later, Apple debuted the iPad. Meanwhile, as mobile phone technology improved and smartphones proliferated, the phone became another vital reading platform. In Words Onscreen, Naomi Baron, an expert on language and technology, explores how technology is reshaping our understanding of what it means to read. Digital reading is increasingly popular. Reading onscreen has many virtues, including convenience, potential cost-savings, and the opportunity to bring free access to books and other written materials to people around the world. Yet, Baron argues, the virtues of eReading are matched with drawbacks. Users are easily distracted by other temptations on their devices, multitasking is rampant, and screens coax us to skim rather than read in-depth. What is more, if the way we read is changing, so is the way we write. In response to changing reading habits, many authors and publishers are producing shorter works and ones that don't require reflection or close reading. In her tour through the new world of eReading, Baron weights the value of reading physical print versus online text, including the question of what long-standing benefits of reading might be lost if we go overwhelmingly digital. She also probes how the internet is shifting reading from being a solitary experience to a social one, and the reasons why eReading has taken off in some countries, especially the United States and United Kingdom, but not others, like France and Japan. Reaching past the hype on both sides of the discussion, Baron draws upon her own cross-cultural studies to offer a clear-eyed and balanced analysis of the ways technology is affecting the ways we read today-and what the future might bring.

Teaching naked : [electronic resource] : How moving technology out of your college classroom will improve student learning.
You've heard about "flipping your classroom" -- now find out how to do it! Introducing a new way to think about higher education, learning, and technology that prioritizes the benefits of the human dimension. José Bowen recognizes that technology is profoundly changing education and that if students are going to continue to pay enormous sums for campus classes, colleges will need to provide more than what can be found online and maximize "naked" face-to-face contact with faculty. Here, he illustrates how technology is most powerfully used outside the classroom, and, when used effectively, how it can ensure that students arrive to class more prepared for meaningful interaction with faculty. Bowen offers practical advice for faculty and administrators on how to engage students with new technology while restructuring classes into more active learning environments.Electronic reproduction.
