This narrative account, from the earliest cave paintings up to the present day, has new things to say about almost every period of art. Taking account of changing scholarship and shifting opinions, he draws our attention to a number of neglected artists and styles, especially in Scandinavia, Germany, Russia and the Americas. Paul Johnson puts the creative originality of the individual at the heart of his story. He pays particular attention to key periods: the emergence of the artistic personality in the Renaissance, the new realism of the early seventeenth century, the discovery of landscape painting as a separate art form, and the rise of ideological art. He notes the division of fashion art and fine art at the beginning of the twentieth century, and how it has now widened. Though challenging and controversial, Paul Johnson is not primarily a revisionist. He is a passionate lover of beauty who finds creativity in many places.

Street art / by Armstrong, Simon,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (page 171) and index.Street Art is a phenomenon and subcultural movement that reaches from the darkest urban backstreets to the most glamorous international art fairs. Simon Armstrong examines how it evolved from its origins in the 1970s New York graffiti scene to embrace many new materials, styles and techniques along the way, tracing how this marginal art form graduated into art galleries and the art market, while also heavily influencing design, fashion, advertising and visual culture. Despite having earned a place in the canon of 20th-century art history, Street Art's qualifications are often disputed both by the art establishment and practitioners themselves, all concerned with notions of authenticity. Examining Street Art's controversial history in detail, this book provides a full-colour worldwide journey, taking in all of the movement's significant artists and artworks, styles, materials and methods, and showcasing the works that have come to define it more than any other. It also examines its close relationship to Pop Art and Digital Art, and explores possible futures for Street Art.

Pop art / by Honnef, Klaus.; Grosenick, Uta,editor.;
"Peaking in the 1960s, Pop Art began as a revolt against mainstream approaches to art and culture and evolved into a wholesale interrogation of modern society, consumer culture, and the role of the artist and artwork. Focusing on issues of materialism, celebrity, and media, Pop Art drew on mass-market sources, from advertising imagery to comic books, from Hollywood's most famous faces to the packaging of consumer products, the latter epitomized by Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup cans. As well as challenging the establishment with the elevation of such popular, banal, and kitschy images, Pop Art also deployed methods of mass-production, reducing the role of the individual artist with mechanized techniques such as screen printing. With featured artists including Andy Warhol, Allan Jones, Ed Ruscha, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein, this book introduces the full reach and influence of a defining modernist movement.Pop art -- Peter Blake: On the balcony -- Allan D'Arcangelo: U.S. Highway 1, number 5 -- Jim Dine: Double isometric self-portrait (Serape) -- Red Grooms: Hollywood (Jean Harlow) -- Richard Hamilton: Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? -- My Marilyn (paste up) -- David Hockney: Tea painting in an illusionistic style -- Robert Indiana: The big eight -- Jasper Johns: Flag -- Allen Jones: Perfect match -- Roy Lichtenstein: Takka takka -- M-maybe -- Yellow and green brushstrokes -- Claes Oldenburg: Pastry case I -- Soft washstand -- Giant fagends -- Peter Phillips: Lions versus eagles -- Custom painting no. 5 -- Mel Ramos: Velveeta -- Robert Rauschenberg: Black market -- James Rosenquist: Untitled (Joan Crawford) -- Edward Ruscha: Standard station -- Hollywood -- George Segal: Woman washing her feet in a sink -- The restaurant window I -- Wayne Thiebaud: Cake counter -- Andy Warhol: 129 die in jet -- Gold Marilyn Monroe -- Two dollar bills (front and rear) -- Campbell's soup can I -- Tom Wesselmann: Still life no. 20 -- Bathtub no. 3 -- Great American nude no. 98.
