- The DiMaggios : three brothers, their passion for baseball, their pursuit of the American dream / by Clavin, Thomas,author.;
- More than 350 sets of brothers have played in the major leagues since the 1870s, but few have had the skill, the charisma, or the success of the DiMaggio brothers. Joe, "The Yankee Clipper," is an American icon, but two of his brothers were dynamic players in their own right. Dominic, known as "The Little Professor," was a seven-time All-Star with the Boston Red Sox 1940-1953. He hit better than .300 five times in his career, and like his big brother, rarely struck out. Vince DiMaggio, the eldest, made two All-Star teams and in 1941 smacked 21 homers and drove in 200 RBIs for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Journalist Tom Clavin draws on a wealth of source materials, interviews with family members and teammates, and in-depth reporting to reveal how three kids from an immigrant family found their way to the upper echelons of American sports and popular culture. This vivid portrait of a family is also an exploration of an era and a culture--From publisher description.

Over 900 entries present clear, detailed descriptions of ideas and theories, descriptions of people and events, and essential facts about court cases, laws and movements. This new edition features a full update of existing material, taking into consideration new terms and language regarding race. Hundreds of articles have been added to this edition, including: Black Lives Matter, Black LGBTQ, Violence in Black Communities, Black Education Achievement Gap, Black Mass Incarceration, Inner City Youth Employment Crisis, Victimology and Black Reparations, and White on Black Killings. Four broad article types present detailed material in a clear, understandable language: theory articles discuss how racial groups are formed, how they change over time, how they relate to one another, and how they affect their members ; history articles provide readers with easy access to a wealth of articles on the historical background of race and ethnicity ; current events & issues offers coverage of the hot topics of today's American societies in a format that enables readers to delve more deeply into many of the key issues affecting our ability to interrelate with peoples of different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Pioneers of Intergroup Relations provides sketches of individuals who have been especially influential in shaping relations among racial and ethnic groups. Additional supplementary materials include a Timeline, Bibliography, Personages Index, and a Subject Index. Designed for high school students, undergraduates, and public library patrons, this updated resource illuminates the many concepts, themes, and issues in race relations in America, both from a historical perspective and in today's modern society. This important work will be a useful addition to high school, university, community college, and public libraries, as well as for history and ethnic studies collections of all sizes"--Provided by publisher.

This important work will be a useful addition to high school, university, community college, and public libraries, as well as for history and ethnic studies collections of all sizes"--Provided by publisher.10-A.

- The stranger in the woods : the extraordinary story of the last true hermit / by Finkel, Michael.;
- "For readers of Jon Krakauer and The Lost City of Z, a remarkable tale of survival and solitude--the true story of a man who lived alone in a tent in the Maine woods, never talking to another person and surviving by stealing supplies from nearby cabins for twenty-seven years. In 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even in winter, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store food and water, to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothes, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed, but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of the why and how of his secluded life--as well as the challenges he has faced returning to the world. A riveting story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded"--Publisher description.

This Yearbook continues in a long line of NCTM Yearbooks that have addressed various facets of the changing mathematics curriculum. Although some factors such as tradition can inhibit significant change, other factors such as policy (e.g., federal No Child Left Behind legislation), societal needs (mathematically literate graduates), and technological advances (computer software, calculators) foster and accelerate the need for change. In the past year alone, a major state-initiated process for developing 'common core standards' is underway. With 48 states and several territories participating in the articulation of 'college and career-ready' high school graduation expectations and common K-12 standards, 2010 promises to be a landmark year of discussion and dialogue about mathematics curriculum. This Yearbook reflects some of the many issues that the field is currently discussing so it serves as both a record of current advances and a summary of challenges regarding curriculum. We hope that it will both guide and stimulate thinking about where we have been, where we are, and where we need to go."--Publisher's description.
