In their fourth book on lighthouses, Jones and Roberts explore the American lighthouses on the five Great Lakes. They give a description of the physical condition of the lighthouse, the type of lens, the status, i.e., whether it is still active, and a brief history of each. Interwoven into the histories are stories of battles, shipwrecks, storms, islands, POW camps, ghosts, lighthouse keepers, and other lake lore. The stories of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior, are especially good. One of the book's greatest strengths are the stunning photos of lighthouses and their rugged settings. All Great Lakes lighthouses are now automated, and many have been turned into private residences and museums. Directions to all lighthouses are given, as are the hours of operation of the museums. Recommended for public libraries for the photos alone and essential for regional collections.-David Schau, Kanawha Cty. P.L., Charleston, W.Va. (c) Copyright 2010.
