Snyder, a doctor of osteopathy whose previous What You Must Know book focused on kidney disease, enthusiastically trumpets the wonders of the liver, which eliminates toxins, balances blood sugar, provides nutrients, clots the blood, and helps regulate the immune system. In the first half of the book, he tackles the conventional treatment of hepatitis A, B, and C; cirrhosis; nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; and liver cancer. In the second half, he looks at complementary therapies and then ends with a useful list of resources and a glossary. He includes general advice for good health, such as exercising and eating nutrient-packed foods like avocado and fish. But he also shares potentially lifesaving information, including a reminder that too much Tylenol (acetaminophen) can damage the liver and a primer on transplants. Comfrey, kava, more than 5,000 units a day of vitamin A, and more than 45 milligrams a day of iron may also hurt it. As Snyder advises, discuss issues like taking supplements with a doctor. Consider this a good resource guide for that conversation.--Springen, Karen Copyright 2016 Booklist
