This addition to the How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians series is geared toward academic librarians interested in collaborating across institutions to create reusable online-learning objects. Drawing on their extensive experience building online asynchronous information literacy instruction as founding members of the multi-institutional New Literacies Alliance, Pitts, Sara K. Kearns, and Heather Collins present a step-by-step approach to creating and sharing online library instruction. This includes establishing a collaborative partnership through development and assessment of online-learning objectives as well as long-range planning. Each chapter begins with a checklist of key steps and ends with a series of critical questions for informed decision making. Though the book as a whole focuses on multi-institutional collaborations, the chapters on instructional design, implementation, and assessment will also be useful for individual librarians undertaking smaller-scale projects. Appendixes include ready-to-use forms, checklists, and rubrics. Practical, concise, and thorough, this book is an excellent reference for academic librarians interested in creating online-learning objects for their communities.--Harmon, Lindsay Copyright 2018 Booklist

Why are librarians across the -country spending time and energy creating the same information literacy instructional content? Pitts (instructional design librarian, Kansas State Univ. Libs.; Library Services for Online Patrons), Sara K. Kearns (academic svcs. librarian, Kansas State Univ. Libs.), and Heather Collins (research & learning dept., Kansas Medical Ctr. Lib.) ask that important question and cover nearly all aspects of constructing learning experiences within a collaborative partnership. Organized logically, with guiding checklists and critical queries, chapters examine envisioning learning experiences, understanding instructional design models (and applying for institutional review board approval), assessing student learning, and sustaining support for projects. Particularly helpful are suggestions for garnering institutional buy-in and formal and informal marketing practices as well as the practical application of template documents. Librarians and faculty familiar with Trudi Jacobson and Thomas P. Mackey's chapter on reusable learning objects in Teaching Information Literacy Online will find this title extremely valuable in guiding that work. VERDICT While not a go-to resource for library instruction, this volume does present a well-documented plan for creating reusable learning objects and managing a cross-institutional project team.-Nancy -Marksbury, Keuka Coll., Keuka Park, NY © Copyright 2018.
