Skewed : A Critical Thinker's Guide to Media Bias

An op-ed writer who has also worked the "objective" side of the pavement, Larry Atkins certainly has the right résumé to offer a "critical thinker's guide to media bias," as the subtitle of Skewed promises. In addition to a survey of the history of advocacy journalism from the late 1700s to the present and a thorough dissection of the demarcations between news and commentary--with stops along the way for discussions of the inverted pyramid, the rise of talk radio, and even celebrity journalism--Atkins (who is a lawyer) covers the bases and demonstrates he has done his homework. The process of news gathering as well as the business context are covered, including a chapter on Fox News. Atkins cites a number of academic sources as well as many famous (sometimes too well-known) examples, such as Rather-gate. However, when it comes to revelation, deeper analysis, or decisive opinion, Skewed is a little shallow, because it confines itself to what is generally known and seems reluctant to wade into the deeper end of the media pool, where issues of institutional bias and pay-to-play corruption are lurking. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers. --Charles Allen Riley, Clarkson University
