Gr. 2-4. At first glance, the sinking of the Titanic may seem a strange topic for beginning readers, but Donnelly does a fine job of making the event appealing to that age group. In simple sentences she describes the ship and explains why it was supposedly the safest ever built. She then tells how the tragedy happened and what long-lasting safety measures were instituted as a result of the event. The full-color art, with many deep purples and blues, is not always expertly executed but is nevertheless dramatic. Older students with reading problems will also find this subject of interest.
