Lucy lives in the sometimes stifling embrace of the Pinecraft Mennonite Community, located just outside of Sarasota, Florida. Most of her day is spent on mind-numbing chores, but one bright spot is the annual arrival of Lucy's best friend, Alice, a snowbird, who travels south every winter. But this year, Alice is in Rumspringa. She's ready to party with her boyfriend, Toby, and an older boy named Faron. That first night, Lucy and Alice fight and Lucy leaves with Faron. By morning, Alice has vanished. Lucy is faced with hard decisions: Should she break with her church and leave to find Alice? What about her growing bond with Faron? This novel is packed with great details about the different Amish orders, the thriving Pinecraft community, and the choices available to young women. At times the narrative feels a bit jerky, as if irresistible tangents defy disciplined plot progression. But this is a nice complement to other novels featuring Amish culture, such as Nancy Grossman's A World Away (2012) and Amy Clipston's Reckless Heart (2012).--Colson, Diane Copyright 2010 Booklist

Gr 7 Up-Rumspringa. The time in an Amish person's adolescence when the modern world is within grasp and temptation may be indulged. Alice, part of an Old Order Amish sect, is in the throes of her Rumspringa, causing her best friend, Lucy, to struggle with the changes. Lucy, a Floridian Mennonite, has spent almost every summer anxiously waiting for Alice to arrive from Maine with the other Old Order Amish "snowbirds." This summer is different. Alice has a cell phone, a boyfriend, and cash stored away to make her escape. An all-night beach party leaves Lucy in the company of a handsome Amish boy and results in Alice's mysterious disappearance. When the local sheriff starts asking questions and members of the community cast incriminating glances, Lucy knows she must discover what happened to Alice. Chappell weaves an engrossing mystery while giving readers a peek into Amish and Mennonite cultures. Subtle interactions within the close-knit communities build suspense and keep readers on their toes. Many readers will relate to Lucy's attempts to find her own identity. Standing on the precipice of adulthood is a balancing act for any teenager, regardless of religious or cultural background. Suggest this to readers seeking a PG-rated romance with an involving plot and developed characters. VERDICT A good choice for fans of Sara Zarr, this absorbing mystery will fit in well in higher-level middle school and reluctant high school reader collections.-Carrie Finberg, South Park High School, PA © Copyright 2017.
