The titles in Oxford's What Everyone Needs to Know series cover complex current events in a manageable, balanced style. The latest titles in the series, China's Economy, Drones, Inequality, and The Pornography Industry, are no exception. Each is written by an expert in the individual field. China's Economy, for example, is written by Beijing-based Kroeber, the editor of China Economic Quarterly. This volume offers highlights of China's economic development from 1979 through today, shedding light on industry, exports, government, the labor market, and social issues. Drones, authored by Cornell law professor and former U.S. Air Force officer Kreps, explains how drones work as well as their current (and potential) applications in both military and civilian life. Inequality, by Galbraith, cowinner of the 2014 Leontief Prize in economic theory, lays out what economic inequality means in the U.S. and why it is a necessary part of today's political and social discussions. Finally, Tarrant, professor of women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Cal State Long Beach, offers objective information on social, economic, and legal issues in The Pornography Industry. These volumes are succinct, carefully written, and well presented, offering readers a history of the topic; an overview of current, pressing issues; and possible solutions or counterpoints. They are recommended for most public and academic libraries.--Vnuk, Rebecca Copyright 2016 Booklist

The Pornography Industry : What Everyone Needs to KnowR

CHOICE

Copyright American Library Association, used with permission.

Tarrant (California State Univ., Long Beach) offers a concise but comprehensive overview of the pornography industry. On the one hand, existing academic books by scholars in media studies, law, women's studies, psychology, business, and other relevant disciplines tend to have particular focuses on pornography, while enabling in-depth investigation on its specific facets. On the other hand, Tarrant's work offers a general overview while addressing diverse topics such as porn's definition, history, viewers and customers, performers, legal implications, medical impacts, influence on children, and future. It also shows that pornography affects us whether or not we produce or consume it, because it surrounds us. It also forces us to question what is sexy, romantic, violent, and pornographic. This is not just a matter of legality or rhetoric. It reveals individual and societal norms and values. Each chapter consists of five to a dozen guiding questions such as "Why does pornography matter?" "What is the data on global porn use?" and "Does pornography have positive benefits?" As the book's subtitle suggests, Tarrant's work is a great introductory text on pornography regardless of one's view on porn. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. --Yuya Kiuchi, Michigan State University
