Complete Crime Scene Investigation Handbook

Baxter (Oklahoma City Police Department) specializes in crime scene investigation, and his expertise is apparent throughout the handbook he authored to accompany his courses on the subject. The volume illustrates and discusses, step-by-step, best practices for recognizing evidence and recording, collecting, and preserving it. The remarkably detailed analytical table of contents offers an introduction (describing the investigative team and forensic search and seizure), followed by sections on "Documentation," "Locating Evidence," "Types of Evidence," "Special Considerations," and "Putting it all Together." In 24 chapters, he covers search patterns, latent fingerprints, injury documentation, evidence collecting and packaging, and much more. The special considerations section reviews clandestine graves and scattered human remains, bloodstain documentation, fire scenes, and questioned document evidence. More than 650 full-color photos and illustrations help readers understand topics such as blood spatter and footwear impression casts. Chapters are very focused, and entries are concise, well written, readable, and detailed. Seven appendixes offer sample forms, search waivers, fingerprint flow charts, and equipment lists. The extensive glossary explains technical terminology, and the subject index is adequate. A separate workbook offers an assortment of exercises to reinforce the lessons of the handbook. Forget the CSI television programs--this volume provides a fascinating look at crime scene investigation by a real expert. Summing Up: Recommended. All libraries/levels. --Karen Evans, Indiana State University
