Unlike congressional biographical reference sources, which need to be updated every two years, reference books on the Supreme Court justices, who are tenured for life, require less frequent updates. The last edition of this work was published in 1995; Cushman (Supreme Court Historical Soc.), who edited the previous volume, here provides profiles of the most recent members of the court and revised bibliographies and charts of congressional confirmations and appointments. Arranged chronologically by date of appointment, the entries, which each average about four to five pages in length, contain a biographical portrait, a discussion of the major cases heard during the justice's term, and interesting anecdotal material on their families, interests, and hobbies. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations enhance the work; a keyword index provides easy access to the text. VERDICT A superb ready-reference source and the most up-to-date one available on the topic. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.-Donald Altschiller, Boston Univ. Lib. CHOICE

"Equal Justice under Law" is the phrase carved into the pediment of the US Supreme Court Building. This motto captures the passion and purpose of the 112 justices who have served on the Court since 1789. Without doubt, these men and four women were and are unique individuals who share an unshakable belief in the rule of law. This third edition (2nd ed., 1995; 1st ed., CH, Jan'94, 31-2455) updates essays and illustrations that appeared in previous ones and includes the first profiles of Chief Justice John Roberts and associate justices Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. In his foreword to the volume, Chief Justice Roberts notes that the essays "bring the justices to life through descriptions of their varied backgrounds, personalities and accomplishments. The summaries provide concise objective insights into each justice's career and jurisprudence." Written by leading constitutional scholars, the well-researched essays are arranged in chronological order of the justices' appointment to the Court. The volume includes a revised bibliography organized by individual justices, and a thorough index. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty; general readers. T. Walch emeritus, Hoover Presidential Library

Booklist

The third edition of this biographical dictionary adds four new profiles: Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Associate Justices Samuel A. Alito, Sonia M. Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan (the newest appointee). The single-volume work encompasses 112 chief and associate justices, organized chronologically by their appointments to the highest court in the land. Chief Justice Roberts supplies the foreword and conveys the importance of this collection of essays about the justices' personal lives, legal contributions, and accomplishments throughout their lives. The entries many of which have been revised from the previous edition vary in length from four to five pages and include an updated black-and-white portrait and other illustrations relating to the justices' lives and court cases. The appendix contains a comprehensive listing of all the justices, providing information in a chart format as to who appointed them, length of service, confirmation, and so on. An extensive and revised bibliography and separate suggestions for young readers are included. A detailed index, which includes reference to court cases, completes this volume. This volume would be a worthwhile purchase for middle- and high-school media centers as well as public and academic libraries as a beginning resource about the members of the Supreme Court.--Harless, Carol Sue Copyright 2010 Booklist
