Space Shuttle Legacy : How We Did It and What We Learned
CHOICE
Copyright American Library Association, used with permission.
This book, edited by Launius (Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum), Krige (Georgia Institute of Technology), and Craig (emer., Georgia Institute of Technology), contains contributions from an eclectic mix of 14 authors including engineers, public administrators, and historians. The book's 15 chapters discuss the political system, leadership, the main engine, the heat shield, electronics and software, shuttle operations, accidents, the space station, and the "shuttle as a cultural icon." Some of the contributions are well written and informative. However, it is not clear who the "we" stated in the title refers to. Readers who want to know how the shuttle was designed and operated should consult other sources such as D. Sivdella's To Orbit and Back Again (CH, Mar'14, 51-3866). Further, the book lacks in-depth information about the extensive knowledge gained from the shuttle program. The text is poorly illustrated with small photographs, graphs, and diagrams, some of which are unreadable or undecipherable. Summing Up: Optional. Only comprehensive space history collections serving general readers. A. M. Strauss Vanderbilt University
