There are many mysteries related to the human heart, but it's a cold, hard fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the West. For that reason alone, the latest entry in this series deserves special attention. DeSilva (medicine, Harvard Medical Sch.; cardiologist, Beth Israel Deaconess, Boston) traces the fascinating course of cardiology history, from early concepts about circulation to today's life-saving surgical treatments. He supplies a wealth of detail in lay terms and underscores the importance of disease prevention. A glossary and chronology are provided. VERDICT An intellectual yet accessible narrative on a number-one killer. (c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Heart disease continues to be the primary killer in the US, with significant costs related to diagnosis and treatment. Here, DeSilva (Harvard Medical School) provides a timely, well-written, clear, and concise account of the history, current treatment, and future direction for dealing with this condition. The author takes the reader from the Egyptian epoch where medicine and magic were seen as one, to the use of genetics for diagnosing, treating, and possibly preventing heart disease. The layout of the book allows for a superficial look at the subject, or one that takes in all its complexities. The volume consists of 13 tightly written chapters followed by a historical time line and an excellent glossary. Of particular note is chapter 1, "History of Cardiology." The litany of names, discoveries, and leaders associated with developing the field of cardiology whets the appetite for further reading. The following chapters move from the anatomy of the heart to recent developments in imaging, treatment, and prevention. The book, part of the "Biographies of Disease" series, appropriately ends with a look toward the future. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General audiences, lower-division undergraduates and two-year technical program students in health sciences, and health care professionals/practitioners. R. G. McGee Jr. formerly, Walters State Community College
