I Love Lucy premiered in 1951; 60 years later it is still shown daily in 30 countries around the world. Lucille Ball's physical comedy, perfect timing, and fantastic facial expressions made her the unforgettable character Lucy. She and her real-life husband Desi Arnaz (the show's Ricky Ricardo) were unafraid to address culturally sensitive material on the show, such as her pregnancy and Desi's Hispanic heritage. In this book, Edwards (I Love Lucy: Celebrating 50 Years of Love and Laughter), a longtime associate of the Arnaz family, has created another great tribute to the iconic show and its stars. She groups episodes in sections that address themes such as friendship, finances, and fashion, and she includes many still photos from each episode. Other elements such as cast and character bios and recipes are also included. An added bonus is a brief historical section on culture, ideals, and the changing roles of women in 1950s America. VERDICT Casual readers will enjoy cruising through this book; Lucy fans will love it. A good purchase for most libraries.-Rosalind Dayen, South Regional Lib., Broward Cty., FL (c) Copyright 2011. I Love Lucy : A Celebration of All Things Lucy - Inside the World of Television's First Great Sitcom
Publishers Weekly
I Love Lucy has been watched and loved by millions of viewers all over the world. Aside from its staggering popularity, this remarkable television show was also a pioneer in several ways-the sitcom was the first to be shot with multiple cameras on a soundstage in front of a live audience, and it was the first to address the topic of pregnancy on television (though they were banned from saying the word "pregnant"). This comprehensive retrospective is rife with commentary on how various story lines and plot devices related to the historical context of the show. Published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the first episode and what would be Lucy's 100th birthday, this exhaustive collection of trivia and interviews is an invaluable resource for Lucy lovers. Edwards (I Love Lucy 50th Anniversary Edition) provides episode guides, a complete list of songs sung by Desi Arnaz (including lyrics), and even a list of memorable costumes. Casual Lucy fans will likely find themselves exasperated with the myriad lengthy lists, but this is a perfect gift-rich with photos and overflowing with information-for Lucy devotees. Photos.
