When A Colour Atlas of Poisonous Plants was published in 1984 (translated from the second German edition), it set a standard for accuracy and reasoned judgment for people dealing with plant poisonings. The present title, which is a translation of the fifth German edition, continues the standard of excellence. Its length has increased substantially since the first English edition and, according to the preface, this volume "contains more than 60% additional material." Frohne and Pfander (both, Christian-Albrechts-Univ. of Kiel, Germany) offer 29 pages of very useful introductory matter, 378 pages of text and illustrations of individual poisonous plants, a 3-page "Synopsis" of berry-like fruits, 29 pages of photographic illustrations of individual leaves, 8 pages dealing with 8 more American plants, a 3-page glossary, and an 8-page index (printed 4 columns to the page). This work will be a highly desirable acquisition for anyone interested in or dealing with poisonous plants or plant poisonings. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All levels. G. P.
